France: Gay couple hospitalized after being beaten by a mob of 20
A French homosexual couple in the city of Lyon was hospitalized after being beaten by at least 20 people in what's been deemed a homophobic attack. According to a report by the French newspaper Le Parisien, the public prosecutor in Lyon's said to have already started an inquiry into the attack that occurred around 1 am on Saturday morning in the commune of Villeurbanne.
The victims are said to be a pair of gay men who had just departed from a friend’s home around 1 am when they were confronted by a group of about 20 people who hurled verbal abuse their way and eventually attacked them physically in the Buers area of the commune.
Fortunately, the pair was able to run away from the violent mob and eventually reached a safe building where they were able to summon the police who arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
After the police had arrived at the scene, they too were attacked by about a dozen men armed with iron bars. At least one police vehicle was damaged as a result of the incident.
After the police managed to control the situation and disperse the mob by using tear gas, the gay couple was then able to be transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, not one of the violent attackers was arrested, France Info reports.
According to the group SOS Homophobie, 2018 saw a record number of attacks against homosexuals in France. In May, the group released a report that claimed that the country had seen 231 physical attacks on homosexuals in 2018 – a 66% increase compared to 2017.
In April of this year, a 21-year-old Tunisian migrant was arrested after he allegedly attacked a homosexual man, stabbing him to death and disemboweling his friend outside of Paris.
In the same month, 2 teens were brought in front of a French court after they were accused of using the gay dating app Grindr to lure gay men to an area where they'd then beat and rob them.
In another case that happened only just a few months prior, 2 radical Islamic extremists were arrested for planning to carry out terror attacks against homosexuals using the same dating app, Le Parisien reported.
